Chilo’s Isn’t Going Anywhere

Entrance to Chilo's in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn

Well, that was quick. Just a few months after announcing its farewell, the permanent closure of Chilo’s has been downgraded to a temporary hiatus.

The cherished Bed-Stuy bar on the corner of Franklin Avenue and Clifton Place will return with a newly winterized outdoor section—finally, adequate shelter for a fantastic food truck plating tacos and tortas with mounds of smoked meats out back—with a party on Sunday, December 28, just in time to serve your first meal and/or drinks of the new year. The “Grand Reopening” is slated to feature a set from DJ Mali, as well as raffles and prizes.

“To everything there is a season and after 10 years, our season has come to an end,” the team wrote back in mid-September, breaking the news of what was initially its final days. But not even three weeks since hosting a closing party on November 9, management claims “a stroke of great fortune” has made them reconsider, according to a recent dispatch on Instagram (see below). The bar was reportedly backed in some part, and for some period of time, by former local Michael Cera. It’s unclear whether the actor is still involved with the business, but here’s hoping Chilo’s has a few more decades left in the tank, no matter who’s paying the bills.
