Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution rolls the premiere episodes of the Culling Games arc into a big-screen event

The next theatrical anime event may not hit as hard at the U.S. box office as Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle or Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, but there’s still reason to get hype for Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution. The upcoming compilation movie stitches together the final episodes of season 2 and the premiere episodes of season 3’s Culling Game arc — and it might be the only way to ever see those episodes on an IMAX-sized screen.

GKids announced on Friday that not only would Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution bow in the U.S. on Dec. 5 (just a month after its Japanese release on Nov. 7) but that it would command IMAX screens for one day only and ahead of release. Execution will debut on the ultra-large format on Dec. 3.

As non-manga-readers can probably surmise from Toho Animation’s ability to seamlessly smash together the end of the Shibuya Incident arc and beginning of the Culling Game arc, the next chunk of JJK’s story picks up right where things left off. The Culling Game arc is the longest stretch in creator Gege Akutami’s series, and based on how faithful the series’ has been thus far, should see the addition of a whole bunch of new characters and cast in the upcoming season. Major players like Higuruma, Takaba, Kashimo, and Naoya join the series alongside the return of Yuta Okkotsu from Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and, well — no spoilers.

Many Jujutsu Kaisen fans had a few issues with the animation style of season 2, with some hoping MAPPA will do the series justice by reanimating sequences from at least one major fight scene. Clearly, if Toho and MAPPA are ready to project the film on the biggest screens imaginable, they’ve done something right.

Judge for yourself — the announcement of the IMAX date came packaged with a brand-new trailer.
