Scores of often ridiculously costumed dogs and thousands of mostly regularly attired humans filled Fort Greene Park‘s monument steps on Saturday for the 27th Annual Great Pupkin Dog Costume Contest.
More than 75 canines actually entered the competition, strutting across the stage dressed as, among many other things, a Krabby Patty, Glinda the Goodest Girl, several lababus, Bad Bunny, a piece of fried chicken, Mifepristone, those freaky kids from Weapons, a sandworm, three separate Dumb and Dumber squads for some reason, coach Sandy Brondello of the NY LIberty, the catbus from Totoro, a very hungry caterpillar, and, to raucous applause, Zohran Mamdoggie.

Judges Pamela Soberman of the Fort Greene Park Conservancy, Council Member Crystal Hudson, and podcaster Ashley Hamilton, had a tough time narrowing the field to three—the audience chooses the grand prize winner via an applause meter—but in the end third place went to the hilarious ball of lint, second place to the dramatically reenacted Louvre jewel theft, and first place to an incredible IRL version of the classic “Chihuahua or Blueberry Muffin?” meme. All three received (s)wag bags with gift certificates and gear from local businesses.

“Dogs don’t have a lot of opportunities to express themselves through style the way people do,” judge Hamilton told Brooklyn Magazine. “My dog Bug loves to put on a costume, and I feel like Halloween is a really important time for dogs to showcase their personalities.”
Emcees Torey Strahl (dressed as Fran Lebowitz) and Dan Fox (dressed as Kareem “Subway Takes” Rahma) kept the huge crowd engaged with non-stop banter, the weather was lovely, and the dogs, for the most part, loved the attention (and the treats).
“The Great Pupkin is such a positive day,” said Jessica Marx of Ridgewood, whose dog Beast entered as part of a “movie theater concessions” costume. “It’s a day when you’re free to be silly, a day that anyone can enjoy.”
