Don’t skip that trip to the mailbox this week—there’s a solid chance you’ve got a few hundred dollars from the state waiting for you to turn the key. You read that right. It’s “inflation refund” season, thanks to Governor Kathy Hochul, whose administration began mailing out checks to more than 8 million eligible New Yorkers last week.
The amounts aren’t huge or anything, but the checks range from $150-$400 based on your 2023 tax return, and they’re being sent out in batches from now until the end of November, the first of which is likely to land at some point this week. “That could help with groceries for a week or two,” Hochul said last Friday in an Albany community center, clearly unaware of how much groceries currently cost outside of the state capital. It is a nice gesture, though, especially as school starts back up for so many families across the state, and the cost of literally everything continues to climb.
The best part? No one needs to fill out any forms or applications to be eligible. So long as they filed a state tax return for 2023 (and weren’t claimed as a dependent), New York residents with an adjusted gross income of less than $300,000 for joint filers and $150,000 for single filers will automatically receive a check at some point between now and, let’s say, the first week of December for those last few batches.
If you’re wondering precisely how much you’ll get for your inflation refund, Gothamist has a pretty handy calculator you can use to figure it out.
