First appearing in Final Fantasy 3, the adorable winged critters known as moogles have become one of the franchise’s mascots. Now you can play one in the fast-paced strategic board game Final Fantasy Moogle Bounty Mayhem, which was released on Aug. 7.
Final Fantasy Moogle Bounty Mayhem is designed by Seiji Kanai, whose 2012 pocket-sized card game Love Letter was such a hit that it has been used as a template for variations based on Star Wars, Bridgerton, and Marvel Comics. Moogle Bounty Mayhem is designed to offer the same mix of complexity and ease of play, with games for two to four players taking about 15 minutes.
The box includes a manga to teach the rules, introducing a set of six moogle siblings who each have their own special ability and set of battle cards – there’s a special die you roll at the start of the game to pick your character. Players compete over the course of six rounds to defeat monsters from Final Fantasy 12. Ryoma Ito, who oversaw the art design for Final Fantasy 12, illustrated the cards, which means the moogles have the rabbit-like look unique to that game.
The tactics come from forming combos with their cards, figuring out where on the board to play cards, and trying to puzzle out how your actions will be impacted by the cards your opponent has placed face down.
“While the game is a trendy, short-duration game, it is a challenging game in which the cards and intentions of the players are intricately intertwined,” Kanai said in a statement.
There’s also good news for players who prefer Final Fantasy’s other famous mascot. Square Enix is combining the 2022 board game Chocobo’s Crystal Hunt and its 2024 expansion Chocobo’s Dungeon & Monsters into Chocobo’s Crystal Hunt Deluxe. Releasing in February 2026, the game will have new card illustrations and rules in Japanese, English, German, and French.
Final Fantasy Moogle Bounty Mayhem is available to purchase for $50.99 through the Square Enix Store. Chocobo’s Crystal Hunt Deluxe is available for preorder for $34.99.
