Walmart plots big expansion at Mebane warehouse

Walmart is adding more than 500,000 square feet to its distribution center in Mebane, bringing the size of the operation to about 1.1 million square feet.

The company didn’t disclose the number of jobs or investment connected to the expansion.

“The expansion of our facility is an exciting next step in Walmart’s grocery network transformation,” Shafter Briscoe Jr., general manager of the center, said in a release. “The advanced technology we’re incorporating into our facility will be game changing in paving the way for a more resilient and efficient supply chain while continuing to offer rewarding careers in the city of Mebane.”

N.C. Rep. Dennis Riddell called it “more good economic news for Alamance County and North Carolina. Walmart’s proposed expansion means more jobs and new opportunities.”

The Alamance News reported on the project in May, citing plans filed with the city of Mebane for the North Carolina Commerce Park project. The Kimley-Horn engineering firm designed the project, the newspaper said.

Technology advances mean that associates who used to manually stack cases can now shift to jobs as automation equipment operators, often with higher base pay, Walmart executive Dave Guggina said in a blog.

Bentonville, Arkansas-based Walmart opened the Mebane center in 2015. It employs about 60,000 people in North Carolina. It ranks among the state’s largest grocery operators.
