North Carolina services hit by global outage: Live real-time updates

A worldwide technology outage has grounded flights and disrupted banks, hospitals and some 911 operations.Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike said the issue is most likely not a security incident or cyberattack. FRIDAY, JULY 19 2:30 p.m. — Winston-Salem/Forsyth-County Schools now said their online system is being impacted by the CrowdStrike outage, as well as the planned outage. 1:52 p.m. — NCDMV said all of its driver’s license offices are now fully operational and have resumed services. Many license plate agencies closed earlier for the remainder of the day. Online services also resumed at MyNCDMV.gov.12:30 p.m. — Winston-Salem/Forsyth-County Schools is experiencing email and website delays due to a system update that is unrelated to the CrowdStrike outage. Employees were notified last month to prepare. Service will be back by Monday morning. Employees are not working today. 12:23 p.m. — The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles released a statement that business services, including but not limited to driver license offices and license plate agencies throughout North Carolina, are impacted. NCDMV will attempt to reach out to customers to reschedule appointments. NCDMV operates 115 driver’s license offices statewide. The 126 license plate agencies in North Carolina are operated by private businesses but are overseen by NCDMV. The outage is also affecting some MyNCDMV.gov online services.11:54 a.m. — Hugh Chatham Health system told WXII it has had a few systems affected. Temporary downtime procedures are in effect where applicable, and patient care continues uninterrupted.11:49 a.m. — Greensboro Transit Authority announced it has no reported issues.11:46 p.m. — Most Cone Health services have returned to normal. While some of the technology was impacted, patient care continues. Cone Health emergency departments, MedCenters and urgent care centers are caring for patients with few changes. Most medical offices are operating normally. In those instances where care is impacted, a non-emergency procedure, for example, staff is contacting those people to reschedule. 11:39 a.m. — The offices of the Danville Department of Social Services, 510 Patton St., remain closed to the public because they do not have internet service. For non-emergency child protective services assistance, call 1-800-552-7096. For non-emergency adult protective services assistance, call 1-888-832-3858.11:04 a.m. — All DMV customer service locations within the Piedmont-Triad area are experiencing issues due to the outage. 10:55 a.m. — Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist told WXII: “Like many other organizations, we are closely monitoring the global CrowdStrike outage and are working diligently to minimize disruption to our patients.”10:35 a.m. — CrowdStrike CEO apologizes for the impact:”We’re deeply sorry for the impact that we’ve caused to customers, to travelers, to anyone affected by this, including our companies,” CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz said on NBC’s “Today” show Friday. “We know what the issue is” and are working to remediate it.He said the system was sent an update, and the update had a bug in it, causing a problem with Microsoft’s Windows operating system.”It was only the Microsoft operating system” that was affected, though it didn’t happen on every Microsoft Windows system, he said.10:31 a.m. — About 1,500 U.S. flights were canceled by late morning, and nearly 4,000 were delayed, FlightAware said.10:30 a.m. — Duke Energy posted on its homepage: “Due to a global outage, the ability to make a payment by ACH and access to the Business, Landlord, and Agency experiences is currently unavailable.”10:25 a.m. — CVS said drugstores and pharmacies are operating normally.10:18 a.m. — Duke Energy told WXII its systems are working.10:06 a.m. — The Greensboro Police Department told WXII people can still call 911. 10:05 a.m. — The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office is not experiencing any impacts.9:58 a.m. — Some airlines at CLT are beginning to resume operations after morning ground stops due to global technology impacts. In the event of any schedule changes, affected patients will be contacted by Duke Health.8:54 a.m. — Duke University Health System sites have been impacted. Essential computer functions in hospitals and clinics have been affected, resulting in delays with some patient services throughout the health system. Most clinics are open, and critical patient services, including emergency departments at Duke University, Duke Regional and Duke Raleigh hospitals, can accommodate patients. Patients will be contacted directly if an appointment must be rescheduled.8:21 a.m. — Winston-Salem Department of Transportation is not experiencing impacts.8 a.m. — The outage delayed flights at PTI, but operations have now continued. Delta released a statement that it is working to issue a travel waiver to allow customers to keep their itinerary and manage changes. American Airlines said it safely re-established its operations. Travelers tell us the outage strained car rentals from the airport. 7:33 a.m. — Charlotte International Airport advises passengers not to come to the airport unless they have confirmed their flight information with the airline.6:30 a.m. — United Airlines said the outage is impacting computer systems. He said the system was sent an update, and the update had a bug in it, causing a problem with Microsoft’s Windows operating system.

“It was only the Microsoft operating system” that was affected, though it didn’t happen on every Microsoft Windows system, he said.
