GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – A global technology outage is affecting airlines, businesses, media and offices here in the Upstate.
According to the Associated Press, Microsoft users worldwide, including banks and airlines, reported widespread outages early Friday morning, hours after the technology company said it was gradually fixing an issue affecting access to Microsoft 365 apps and services.
Officials said the outage was caused by a faulty software update.
Airlines
The Federal Aviation Association (FAA) has grounded several airlines. The FAA said it made the decision due to communication issues.
Affected airlines included United, Allegiant, Delta and American airlines.
FOX Carolina crews at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport said anyone with a checked bag has to pay through the airline’s app.
Some flights are starting to see cancellations and delays.
A large-scale technical outage is currently impacting several airlines operating at GSP. Travelers scheduled to fly today should verify their flight status before heading to the airport.

Businesses
At some businesses here in the Upstate, customers will have to pay with cash due to card networks being down.
Banks and ATMs have also been knocked offline.
Viewers reported the following Upstate businesses being affected:
- Purchasing tickets from the Peace Center
- Fuji Film in Greenwood
- TD Bank
- Bank of America
- Home Depot
- Spinx on Batesville Road in Spartanburg
- BorgWarner Inc. in Seneca
- The North Carolina Department of Transportation said several NCDMV officers are unable to assist customers.
- Food Lion
- Greenwood County Clerk of Court
Media outlets, including FOX Carolina, were initially disrupted early Friday morning.
FedEx released the following statement on the impacts they experienced:
“FedEx has activated contingency plans to mitigate impacts from a global IT outage experienced by a third-party software vendor. We are working diligently to lessen any impact on service, and we appreciate our customers’ patience. For questions on shipment status information, please visit fedex.com.”
Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike said that the issue believed to be behind the outage was not a security incident or cyberattack. CrowdStrike said the issue stems from a faulty update to computers running Microsoft Windows.
