Police arrested a man armed with a gun after he broke into a downtown Asheville, North Carolina business, officials said Tuesday.(Above video is the Tuesday morning headlines for July 16, 2024.)Rick Rice with the Asheville Police Department said officers responded just after 6:30 a.m. on Monday to a business on Patton Avenue about a breaking and entering. Rice said officers quickly arrived at the scene to find a man running off. “While attempting to evade officers, the suspect discarded several items on the sidewalk taken from the business,” Rice said. “Shortly thereafter, he was taken into custody.Police also recovered a stolen firearm the suspect attempted to discard in a nearby trashcan, according to Rice.Troy Dean Serna, 35, was charged with possessing a stolen firearm, possession of a firearm by a felon, breaking and entering, and resisting a public officer, Rice said.He said Serna was booked into the Buncombe County Detention Facility under a $50,000 secured bond issued by a magistrate.
