Tractor-trailer fire on Intestate 85 Business/US 29/70 South in High Point


HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP) — Traffic was halted and diverted as a result of a vehicle fire on Interstate 85 Business/US 29/US 70 near Old Thomasville Road in Randolph County on Thursday.

Video on Business 85 showed an overturned tractor-trailer bursting with flames on the side of the road under a bridge and traffic being diverted.

Around 11:25 a.m., a tractor-trailer and a Lexus were going south on Interstate 85 Business/US 29/US 70 when the Lexus merged into the right travel lane and hit the tractor-trailer, according to a North Carolina State Highway Patrol news release.

The tractor-trailer traveled off the road, hit a bridge abutment for the Old Thomasville Road overpass, overturned and caught fire.

The driver of the tractor-trailer suffered serious life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to a hospital.

The driver of the Lexus was not hurt.

High Point police say that a hazmat crew was called to the scene.

The southbound lanes of Business 85 were closed for an extended period of time.

Officials with the North Carolina Department of Transportation assessed the damage to the bridge, and troopers are investigating the crash.
