Missouri-based Leggett & Platt will close its bedspring manufacturing facility in High Point by the end of September, resulting in the loss of 158 jobs, according to paperwork filed with the state.
A first round of layoffs will begin around July 25.
The layoffs are a result of a “consolidation of operations,” according to a letter notifying the state of the layoff. In its most recent annual report Leggett reported it planned to reduce its number of employees by between 900 and 1,100 workers.
The company employed about 19,300 workers at the end of 2023, with about 10,900 of those working at international sites, according to the report.
Workers at the High Point site are not part of a union and do not have bumping rights. Of the 158 workers, 134 of them work in production or production support; nine in administrative or clerical work; and 15 in management, according to the company.
“The company is exploring several sources of outplacement assistance” for employees, according to paperwork filed with the state.
Headquartered in Carthage, Missouri, Leggett & Platt has been manufacturing bedsprings since 1883. The company also makes materials for home products and the automotive industry. It has 135 production facilities in 17 countries.
Leggett & Platt reported sales of $4.73 billion in 2023, down 8% from the year before. It projects 2024 sales to be between $4.35 billion and $4.65 billion, down 2% to 8% from 2023.
